A mid 19th century Irish arbutus, yew and inlaid folding backgammon and chess/drafts gaming board/box Probably Killarney, circa 1860 The exterior with a chequered border around the squares, the outer border decorated with clover and fern in each corner, the interior decorated with boxwood, arbutus points and inlaid ferns, together with a a pair of modern wooden dice shakers, two pairs of modern plastic dice and a larger plastic die. 90cm high, 50cm wide, 25cm deep overall Footnotes: Wood from the arbutus or strawberry tree and other local woods were utilised in the production of furniture and treen in Southern Ireland from the 1830's. The arbutus tree is particularly associated with the South West of Ireland as it flourished in the mild and damp conditions of this part of the country whereas it was usually found growing as a native near the Mediterranean sea. The centre for marquetry wares incorporating arbutus was Killarney, but by 1860 the burgeoning industry extended beyond this more specific area. Jeremiah O'Connor of Killarney is perhaps one of the greatest exponents of Killarney marquetry ware, but similar work was produced in Dublin and Cork as well. Literature Austen, B, 'Tunbridge Ware'. Buyers' Premium and Charges


For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
