In particular, he worked under Iain Macleod in his efforts to expedite the decolonisation of countries formerly under the British Empire in Africa. According to the current 19th Earl, one of David's anecdotes concerned Hastings Banda, the Prime Minister of Malawi at Independence in 1964, and President from 1966-1993. 'Hastings Banda came to dinner at my grandparents' apartment at Hyde Park Gardens soon after release from prison in 1960. The door was opened to Banda by an Irish maid who, much to their consternation, brightened on seeing him and enveloped him in an embrace. It turned out that he'd been their family doctor in Kilburn in the late 40's.'
