A French 18th century tin-glazed earthenware figure of Louis-René de la Chalotais Probably Rennes Wearing an advocate's robes with ermine cape and clutching a book in his left hand, painted with enamels, on a rectangular base, losses to right hand, 17cm wide x 13.5cm deep x 46cm high (6 3/4in wide x 5 3/8in deep x 18 1/8in high) Footnotes: Provenance: With Ginsburg & Levy Inc., New York where purchased 9 April 1965. Exhibited: Detroit Institute of Arts, French Taste in the 18th Century, no. 244. A similar example can be found at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, C.100-1926. Louis-René de la Chalotais (1701-1785) was a French legal scholar most known for his part in the 'Brittany Affair'. Often seen as a precursor to the French Revolution, in 1764 the Breton Parlament refused the authority of the French monarchy over taxes.
