A Shanghai export porcelain part dinner service, 1937 The white ground with polychrome and gilt painted Drummond family Goshawk crest beneath the motto Virtutem Coronat Honos, comprising: two large punch bowls, 37cm diameter; two fruit bowls, 31cm diameter; twelve graduated oval serving dishes, the largest: 45.75cm wide; 19 saucers, 15cm diameter; 25 starter plates, 22.75cm diameter; 24 soup plates, 25cm diameter 44 dinner plates, 25.75cm diameter; five twin-handled soup tureens and covers, four with conforming soup spoons, 24.5cm wide; a further seven slightly larger twin-handled tureens and covers (one cover broken), 25.5cm wide; and six matched side plates, lacking central crest, 22cm diameter (150). Footnotes: Provenance: Commissioned by Lady Perth to The Little Shop, Shanghai, 13 December 1935. In the 1930's the then David Drummond worked with 'father of Europe' Jean Monnet as one of the two employees of boutique investment bank Monnet, Mernaine & Co. They spent several long stints in China working on the establishment of the China Development Finance Corporation for then Minister of Finance, and later Premier of the Republic of China, T.V. Soong. David's final stay, for which Nancy was with him, was for more than a year in 1936-7. As the receipts for the china show, he paid the invoice from 'The Little Shop' on 23 July 1937. Three weeks later on 13th August the Japanese crossed the Bazi Bridge in Zhabei and the Battle of Shanghai commenced.
