Nikifor (Nikifor Krynicki) (Polish, 1895-1968) Przemyśl County inscribed 'PRZEMSL POWIAT WILLA CROZNIA / SELO' (in pen, along the lower edge); with the artist's stamp (on the reverse) and a photograph of the stamps (affixed to the backing board) gouache on card 22.0 x 17.5 cm (8 11/16 x 6 7/8 in). framed 24.5 x 20.2 x 2.0 cm (9 5/8 x 7 7/8 x 13/16 in). Footnotes: N.B. Nikifor was born Epifaniy Drovnyak in Poland and grew up in conditions of extreme poverty. He experienced a very difficult childhood; he was orphaned after World War I, had severe hearing and speech impediments, and was likely nearly illiterate. It is unknown exactly how or when Nikifor began learning to draw, but his earliest works date to around 1920. He began to experience some success abroad in Paris in the 1930s, primarily among the Kapists - a group of young Polish artists - but never quite gained any broader public notoriety until the 1960s. By this time Nikifor had returned to Poland after being deported during Operation Vistula in 1947 and was living in a nursing home. Nikifor is now considered a preeminent primitive painter and his work has gained substantial international recognition. Most of Nikifor's oeuvre comprises depictions of Greek Orthodox and Catholic churches and his hometown of Krynica. As reflected in the present work, almost all of his works are small in scale, often made on scraps of paper or other material, filled with vivid colors, and imbued with a sense of captivating, almost-dreamlike nostalgia.
