Wolf Kibel (Polish, 1903-1938) Abstract Landscape unsigned; inscribed 'W. Kibel signed by Mrs F. Kibel' (on the reverse); with a handwritten label 'Kibel Estate' (affixed to the reverse) oil on Masonite sight size 17.2 x 17.9 cm (6 3/4 x 7 in). framed 38.5 x 38.1 x 3.9 cm (15 1/8 x 15 x 1 1/2 in). Footnotes: Provenance Rose Korber, Cape Town, South Africa. A private collection, Maryland (acquired from the previous, 1997). A private collection, Chicago, IL (by descent from the previous). N.B. Wolf Kibel was born in Poland to a family of singers and craftsmen. His father's death when Wolf was only 8 left the family struggling to make ends meet; Kibel then found various odd jobs, including as apprentice to a bookbinder and a shoemaker. In 1923 Kibel left Poland for Paris and then Vienna, where he lived as an impoverished refugee and found opportunities to paint wherever he could. He moved to Jerusalem in 1925 and then to Tel Aviv; throughout this time he was homeless and penniless and suffering from the aftermath of a bout of malaria that he had contracted on his trip to Jerusalem. In Tel Aviv, Kibel finally settled long enough to become part of a vibrant artists' community whose members were greatly inspired by the work of early post-Impressionists and modernists like Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, and Henri Matisse. During this period Kibel worked primarily with watercolors and black-and-white drawing. These media were both challenging and less expensive than oil paints. It was here that he met his wife, Freda, as well. In 1929 Kibel left Tel Aviv for Cape Town, where his brother, a cantor at a synagogue, had offered him housing. He was unimpressed by the artistic scene in Cape Town, however, and immediately began putting on shows in order to earn money to return to Tel Aviv. His contemporary avant-garde work made waves in his new community as Expressionism had not yet made its mark on the South African art scene. Kibel eventually drew the attention of local artist Hugo Naudé. Naudé encouraged Kibel to remain in Cape Town and begin his own studio; Kibel did so and continued to exhibit throughout Cape Town to audiences who were at times hostile to and at times impressed by his art. He eventually passed away from tuberculosis in his South African studio in 1938, at age 35. While his work may have been controversial during his lifetime, Kibel is now considered a foremost modernist and a crucial player in the development of post-War South African art. Kibel's work displays a wide range of influences, from Fauvists like Matisse to Eastern European Jewish Expressionists like Soutine and Chagall. He employed strong, active brushstrokes (particularly reminiscent of Van Gogh) and a subdued palette while avoiding depictions of pastoral, idealized landscapes or figures; instead, he focused on evoking the real qualities of everyday life and nature. The present work is a wonderful example of Kibel's ability to imbue his scenes with a vibrant animacy; one can almost feel the wind in the trees and feel the rolling hills beneath one's feet. It was likely painted during Kibel's later career in Cape Town. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
