Charles Bidulph (1709-1784) of Burton Park in Sussex was born at Biddulph, Staffordshire. The family relocated to Burton Park in 1724, after inheriting the estate there by marriage. Charles married Elizabeth Bedingfeld (1722-1763) in 1749, and it is possible that this plate was commissioned in celebration of their marriage. A Wincanton armorial plate dated 1737 painted in very similar style and with an identical cash border is illustrated by Lipski and Archer, Dated English Delftware (1984), p.97, no.418.
