A rare Liverpool-printed creamware 'Bidston Hill' mug, circa 1793-97 Printed in black and hand-coloured with 'An East View of Liverpool Light House & Signals on Bidston Hill', the tower flanked by 58 numbered flags, above a list naming the corresponding ship owners, 12cm high Footnotes: Provenance Graham Slater Collection The lighthouse at Bidston Hill, one of the highest points on the Wirral, guided ships into the Mersey and the signals alerted those at the docks to which particular merchant's ship was approaching. A jug with an earlier variation of the print listing 47 flags and dated 1789 was sold by Bonhams on 22 June 2022, lot 203. The present lot has 58 flags and crucially one for 'Enemies', indicating England was already at war with France and can be no earlier than 1793. Furthermore, the mug must predate 1797 as flag 28 is 'Mr Wilding's'. Richard Wilding was keeper of Bidston Lighthouse until his death in 1797.
