Sixteen Liverpool delftware tiles, circa 1765-75 Printed by John Sadler in red, black or brown, all with rococo scroll '88' borders and showing a great variety of subjects, 10-12.8cm wide (16) Footnotes: Provenance With Jonathan Horne (six tiles) Norman Stretton Collection (D2-4) Graham Slater Collection All sixteen designs are represented in Anthony Ray's paper 'Liverpool Printed Tiles', ECC Trans, Vol.9, Pt.1 (1973), where similar printed tiles are illustrated. One of the red-printed tiles (B4-3) depicts 'Miss Nancy Dawson dancing the Hornpipe', which also appears in the Ladies' Amusement, Plate 32. Other tiles portray a religious subject, namely David with the Head of Goliath (D1-2). There are three tiles with theatrical subjects including one with Harlequin between two ladies, possibly Ragonda and Columbine (D2-4). Others from a series depicting 'Genteel Life' include a lady and gentleman dancing to a fiddler, an obelisk in the background (D4-10) and three ladies by a fountain (D4-9). From 'Rustic Life', a tile shows a 'Modern Demirep on the Look-out' (D5-25), the young lady promenading and searching for a companion, taken from print of this title by Grignion after Brandoin, published by Sayer in 1771. A tile printed in brown has an oriental subject, the so-called 'Turkish Merchant' (D6-1) which is also found printed on Wedgwood creamware. Three tiles are from the most numerous series, depicting Aesop's Fables, and show 'The Hawk and the Farmer' (D8-28), 'The Stag Looking into the Water' (D8-40) and 'The Two Travellers and the bear' (D8-42).
