Eight Liverpool delftware tiles, circa 1755-80 Four woodblock-printed tiles by John Sadler in blue or manganese; three of these with 'Louis XV' borders, one without a border and in a dark inky blue, depicting a canal scene; and four neoclassical tiles, printed by Guy Green in black and washed in various tones of green enamel, one of a muse with a lyre, the other three with classical urns within scrolling foliate borders, approx 12.2-12.7cm wide (8) Footnotes: Provenance With Jonathan Horne (two blue woodblock-printed tiles with Louis XV borders) Graham Slater Collection The woodblock-printed tile without a border is rare. Ray records it as a Dutch canal scene in his paper 'Liverpool-printed Tiles', ECC Trans, Vol9, Pt.1 (1973), A5-3. Printed decoration on tiles was an entirely English advancement but Sadler looked to English painted tiles (most based in turn on Dutch prototypes) for some of the initial inspiration for these designs. The three woodblock-printed tiles with Louis XV borders are after rococo designs from a series of prints by J E Nilson of Augsburg and are also listed by Ray (1973), A1-1 and A1-4. The neoclassical tiles by Guy Green are illustrated at pls.54-56. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
