A study collection of Dutch Delft tiles and fragments, 16th-18th century Including a maiolica polychrome 'Medallion' tile with a unicorn, two maiolica 'Diamond Flower Vase' tiles, a polychrome 'Star and Tulip' tile, four blue and white paving tiles with 'Accolade' borders, a blue flower vase tile with manganese ground, and a single tile from a polychrome picture, together with a quantity of European tile fragments including a Spanish Olambrilla in blue and lustre, and an Antwerp 'corner tile' with dark blue foliage (Qty) Footnotes: Provenance Graham Slater Collection The tile from a chinoiserie picture in this lot matches examples in the Amalienburg Pavilion at Nymphenburg, while identical manganese-ground flower vase tiles were used in the cellars of Het Loo Palace, see C H de Jong, Dutch Tiles (1971), pls. 90 and 130-133. The early unicorn paving tile is a type that inspired copies made in London. The fragments, all excavated in London, illustrate the mass importation of Dutch and other European tiles into England. An identical Antwerp corner tile in the Museum of London is illustrated by Frank Britton, London Delftware (1986), fig.198.
