A very rare London delftware plate, circa 1762-65 Probably Lambeth, painted in blue, green yellow and manganese with Miss Nancy Dawson's hornpipe, she dancing in a pastoral setting attended by a seated gallant, within a tramline border, the rim with four formal sprays of flowers, 23cm diam Footnotes: Provenance With Jonathan Horne, 1985 Graham Slater Collection The popular image of Nancy Dawson's hornpipe, which she did whilst appearing in 'The Beggar's Opera' at Covent garden in October 1759, was widely used on British ceramics and enamels in the mid-18th century. Derived from a print titled 'Miss Nancy Dawson Dancing the Hornpipe', the image featured in the 1762 edition of The Ladies Amusement, pl.32. An almost identical plate is illustrated alongside the source print by Michael Archer and Brian Morgan, Fair as China Dishes (1977), pp.118-9, no.84.
