A medieval Borderware money box, 16th century, and various post-medieval pottery and fragments Including a Borderware money box, mammiform with a mottled green glaze, 8.5cm, an owl costrel, probably New Forest, 12cm high (base lacking), an Islamic lamp of zoomorphic form, perhaps a mouse, a three-footed piggin with side handle, 11cm high, a berry cup with yellow glazed interior, part of a candlestick, and a fragment of a fireback with the Tudor royal arms (Qty) Footnotes: Provenance Graham Slater Collection Pottery money boxes of Borderware were particularly associated with Tudor theatres and playhouses. Parts of an estimated 162 money boxes, similar to the present lot, were found during the excavations of the Rose theatre site on Bankside and it is likely that these ceramic boxes were used to collect entrance fees from the audience. It cost one penny to enter the theatre, where you could stand in the yard to watch the performances. It cost a second penny if you wanted to sit in the galleries and a third penny to enter the seating areas with the best views and cushions. The money boxes were so cheap that they would have been smashed to get the collected money after the performances.
