Two London saltglaze tavern jugs, late 17th-early 18th century One of 'gorge' shape with a globular body, with an indistinct excise stamp on the grooved neck, 11cm high, the other a cylindrical jug with a pinched lip and strap handle now lacking, the applied panel on the front with a modelled portrait of King George I and the name '...WORSFOLD', 12cm high, together with a fragment from a similar mug with a portrait of George II (3) Footnotes: Provenance Graham Slater Collection The royal portrait on the applied medallion probably means that this jug was made for a London tavern named 'The Kings Head' or 'The George'. The gorge bears a British excise stamp and although indistinct, this suggests a London origin for this piece also. Two examples are illustrated by Massey, Marno and Spero, Ceramics of Vauxhall (2007), figs.13 and 14.
