Four English delftware plates and a bowl, circa 1740-60 One Liverpool, painted in yellow, green, blue and manganese with a gentleman doffing his hat to a lady seated beside a gate, before tall trees and distant buildings, one painted in blue with a bridge leading to an island of buildings with a bird in flight above, the rim edged in brown, and two painted in blue and manganese with chinoiserie landscapes incorporating houses, the bowl London, painted in blue with bamboo and flowers within a diaper and flowerhead border, 19.3-22.4cm diam Footnotes: Provenance With Bruce Howard, 1992 (two in blue and manganese) Graham Slater Collection A very similar Liverpool polychrome plate is illustrated by Michael Archer, Delftware (1997), p.228, no.B244. For a powder brown ground plate and shallow bowl painted in blue to the centre with a very similar design as the bowl, see Frank Britton, English Delftware (1982), p.246, no.15.34 and Michael Archer, Delftware (2013), p.103, no.B38. Archer states that a fragment corresponding to the pattern was excavated by Garner in Lambeth and is also found on a plate dated 1741.
