Six English delftware plates and a bowl, circa 1740-60 One Liverpool, finely painted in manganese with two Chinese figures in an oriental garden, within blue line borders, the others finely painted in blue, including four Liverpool, one with an identical chinoiserie scene, one with prunus, and two with flowering plants, one Bristol, with two deer recumbent in a landscape beneath two birds in flight, the bowl with a figure crossing a bridge before a pagoda and rocks, birds in flight above, all but one with red-brown line rims, 21.2-21.8cm diam (7) Footnotes: Provenance With Mercury Antiques, 1983 (deer) Amos Collection, Christie's, 9 April 1984 (bowl) With Jonathan Horne, 2002 (manganese) Graham Slater Collection A similar plate to the example with two deer, probably Bristol, is illustrated by Frank Britton, English Delftware (1982), p.197, no.12.53. A plate dated 1738 with the same design to the centre as the bowl is illustrated by Michael Archer, Delftware (1997), pp.209-10, no.B204, where he states that fragments bearing similar birds have been found in London, Bristol and Liverpool. The pattern of two figures and a willow tree was a popular design, represented in manganese and in blue in this lot is discussed by Roger Massey, English delftware and the influence of Chinese blue and white porcelain, 1730-50, ECC Trans, Vol.31 (2020), pp.44. The author also illustrates a Chinese export teapot stand painted in blue and over-painted in enamel colours in London in the 1740s at fig.18.
