[Apollo 9] JETTISON OF THE S-IVB STAGE IN EARTH ORBIT AFTER LM EXTRACTION Russell Schweickart, David Scott or James McDivitt, 3-13 March 1969 Printed 1969. Vintage chromogenic print on fibre-based Kodak paper [NASA image AS9-19-2940]. Numbered 'NASA image AS9-19-2940' in red in the top margin, with 'A Kodak Paper' watermark on the reverse (issued by NASA Manned Spacecraft Centre, Houston, Texas). 25.4 x 20.3 cm. (10 x 8 in.) Historical context This photograph captures the S-IVB third stage of the Saturn V rocket after the extraction of the docked Lunar Module (LM) from the adapter, with the cloud-covered Pacific Ocean in the background. A LM thruster quad is visible in the foreground. For the first time in history, the Apollo 9 crew successfully executed the crucial manoeuvre of docking with the LM-SIVB and extracting the Lunar Module from its protective adapter atop the Saturn V's third stage, where it had been housed during launch.
