He won the 1863 St. Leger Stakes by half a length after an exciting race which one reporter stated 'unsurpassed by any spectacle of the kind. For half a century to come the story of that race will be told' ('The Last Two Days at Doncaster', in Otago Witness, issue 581, 16 January 1863, p.6).
