Attributed to John Westbrooke Chandler (active England, circa 1764-1804) Portrait of Alleyne Fitzherbert, 1st Baron St Helens, three-quarter-length, standing before a red curtain oil on canvas 129.6 x 101.2cm (51 x 39 13/16in). framed: 147.5 x 119.7cm Footnotes: Provenance John Jervis, Admiral of the Fleet and 1st Earl of St Vincent (1734-1823) and by descent through the family to the present owners Engraved William Ward, mezzotint Alleyne Fitzherbert, 1st Baron St Helens (1753-1839) was a diplomat who served as Minister Plenipotentiary to Russia from 1783-8, to Spain in 1790-94 and was also a member of the Privy Council and a Trustee of the British Museum. His friendship with the explorer George Vancouver led to his name being given to Mount St Helens in Washington State. He never married but for many years had a close friendship with Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King George III. In 1797 Fitzherbert's house and all its contents burned to the ground and he narrowly escaped with his life. One can only presume that his portrait by Chandler was lost in that fire and that this could possibly be a second version that he gave to John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent. Although the condition of the present work is consistent with fire damage and it is plausible that this could be Chandler's original work.
