Jh.n.C.a) AUGENMASKE. - Zwei mit feinem Steg zum Paar verbundene Goldbleche in Augenform; breite Streifen mit feinen Querstrichen zur Imitation der Wimpern um die Augäpfel; aussen Punktrahmen. b) MUND. – Innen durch feine Linie getrennte Lippen, gerahmt von Zickzack- und Punktband. Äussere Lidwinkel etwas beschnitten oder verbogen; feiner Riss an einem Lidrand; sonst intakt. Diese Auflagen wurden dem Toten zur Bestattung auf das Gesicht gelegt.Provenienz: Ehem. europäische Privatslg., 1998.Das Vorkommen solcher Goldbleche erstreckt sich von archaischer bis römischer Zeit im Bereich Nordgriechenlands, des Schwarzen Meeres bis nach Kleinasien. A.D.a) EYE MASK. - Two eye-shaped leaves of gold sheet connected by a thin bar to form a pair; wide stripes with fine perpendicular lines in imitation of eyelashes around an eyeball; dotted frame at the periphery. b) MOUTH. – Lips separated by a fine line; mouth framed by zigzagging and a band of dots. Outer corners of the eyes trimmed or bent; fine fissure on the edge of one lid; otherwise undamaged. The masks were laid on the face of the deceased prior to burial.Provenance: Formerly European priv. coll., 1998.Sheet gold masks like these dating from Archaic to Roman times have been found in northern Greece, around the Black Sea and in Asia Minor.
