In Vitruvs Architekturtraktat ist die Erfindung des korinthischen Kapitells überliefert. Dort heißt es, dass die früh verstorbene Tochter eines wohlhabenden Bürgers ganz nach antiker Sitte außerhalb der Stadt an einer Straße bestattet worden sei. Ihre Amme, traurig über den Verlust ihres Schützlings, hatte einen Korb mit den Spielsachen des Mädchens neben das Grabmal gestellt und mit einer Steinplatte abgedeckt. Nach einiger Zeit war die Akanthuspflanze, auf welchem das Körbchen zufällig stand, ausgetrieben und wuchs an den Korbseiten empor. Als der Maler und Bildhauer Kallimachos das Grabmal mit dem überwachsenen Korb erblickte, wurde er zur Neuschöpfung der Kapitellform der korinthischen Säule inspiriert.

Zustand:
Die vier Säulen zeigen stärkere Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren. Die Oberflächen sind partiell berieben, sodass Lack bzw. Vergoldung abgeplatzt ist. Eine Säule weist Wurmfraß (inaktiv) auf. Unter UV-Licht werden mehrere kleinere Retuschen sichtbar. Die Plinthen zweier Säulen fehlen. Die Höhen der Säulen ohne Holzstifte messen 79,5 cm und 77,5 cm. (nlu)

The invention of the Corinthian order is being told in Vitruvius' architectural treatise. It recounts that the young deceased daughter of a wealthy citizen had been buried out of town near a street, in conformity with the ancient customs. Her nurse, sorrowful about the loss of her protégé, had put a basket with the girl’s toys next to the tomb and covered it with a stone slab. After some time, the acanthus plant, on which the basket was coincidentally placed, spouted and grew outward along the sides of the basket. When the painter and sculptor Callimachus saw the tomb with the overgrown basket, he was inspired to create the capital of the Corinthian order.

Condition:
The four columns bear heavier signs of age and wear. The surfaces are partially rubbed so that the lacquer respectively the gold setting is chipped. One column is wormy (inactive). Under UV-light several smaller touch-ups can be seen. The plinths of two columns are missing. The heights excluding the pins measure 79.5 cm and 77.5 cm. (nlu)
