Der Muschelschnitt, d.h. die Bearbeitung von Muschelmaterial ist bereits seit der Antike bekannt. Vor allem in der Renaissance erlebte der Muschelschnitt seine Blüte, deren wichtigste Künstler Italiener waren. Ihr Einfluss war jedoch international und so findet man in ganz Europa Werke in Muschelschnitt. Neben der Bearbeitung von Muscheln, so. z.B. Nautilusmuscheln die oftmals geschnitten oder geätzt sind, wurden Muscheln natürlich auch dekorativ verwendet, wie einer der beiden angebotenen Schaukästen zeigt. In äußerst ornamentaler Kunstfertigkeit wurden kleinste Muscheln verschiedener Arten zu einem prachtvollen Bouquet zusammengesetzt, ausgestattet mit Blattwerk aus Papier in einem Korb aus Bergkristall.

Auch die Geschichte der Wachsplastik kann auf eine lange Tradition zurückblicken, wurde sie doch bereits im alten Ägypten, Griechenland und Rom angewandt. Das Wachs wurde hier zu besonders filigranen Formen gebildet und eingefärbt, sodass sich auch im zweiten Schaukasten ein wundervolles Bouquet ergeben hat, welches unter anderem Nelken, Rosen und Passionsblumen präsentiert.

Beide Werke bestechen durch ihre hohe Handwerkskunst und erinnern an Objekte der Barocken Wunderkammern und Raritätenkabinetten.

Zustand:
Die Werke zeigen Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren. Einzelne Elemente der Bouquets haben sich abgelöst und sind nicht mehr am Korb bzw. der Rückwand befestigt. Der Gesamterhaltungszustand ist dennoch gut. Die Maße der Kästen betragen je 55,6 x 69,4 x 16 cm. (nlu)

Shell cut, that is the handling of shell material, has been known since ancient times. Especially during the Renaissance the shell cut witnessed its prime, the most important artists being Italians. Their influence, however, was international and thus we find works in shell in the whole of Europe. In addition to the processing of mussels, like nautilus shells that are often cut or etched, shells were also used decoratively, as one of the two offered display cases shows. In an extremely ornamental craftsmanship, smallest shells of various kinds were assembled into a magnificent bouquet, fitted with foliage of paper in a basket made of rock crystal.

The history of wax sculpture, too, can look back on a long tradition, since it was already used in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. Here, the wax was formed to particularly filigree shapes and colored, so that the second showcase, too, displays a wonderful bouquet, which presents besides carnations, roses and passion flowers.

Both works captivate by their high craftsmanship and evoke objects of Baroque cabinets of curiosities and rarities cabinets.

Condition:
The works bear signs of age and wear. Individual elements of the bouquets have come off and are no longer attached to the basket, respectively the rear wall. The overall conservation status is nevertheless good. The dimensions of the cases are each 55.6 x 69.4 x 16 cm. (nlu)
